On April 27th Emmett had a cyst removal surgery. He was born with a dermoid cyst on his right temple. It looked like a bump, but after further investigation found that it was a little cyst. After talking with Dr. Jensen, a crainiofacial surgeon, we found out that the cyst could continue to enlarge in size and depth. With that we decided to get it removed. We scheduled the surgery during our spring break. We went over to the Warner's Tuesday night, had dinner there, got Brooklyn ready for bed, and then left for home without her. Kristin (and Jack and Jay) were so kind to offer to watch Brooklyn for the night before and day of the surgery. She had a blast with them!
The surgery took place at the Children's Hospital Outpatient building. We arrived around 6:30 am (Emmett couldn't have anything to eat after his bedtime bottle, which I was very nervous about, but went better than expected), got checked in, and was back in the prep room by 6:45.
Emmett looked so cute in his little hospital gown. He had no idea what was about to happen. I was terrified of the anesthesia, but after talking with the anesthesiologist, my mind was put at ease. After being in the prep room for about 30 minutes, talking with the doctor, several nurses, and the anesthesiologist, Emmett was taken away from us (sniff, sniff) and we were sent into the waiting room. We were stunned by how full the waiting room was. I sat and wondered what everyone else was in there for. Were they as scared as I was? Was this normal for them? Out of all things that could be wrong, I felt VERY blessed that Emmett was a happy healthy little baby (with just a little cyst on his head).
The surgery lasted about 30 minutes and then we were called into a "meeting room" where we talked with Dr. Jensen about how everything went. We waited about 15 more minutes and then were sent to the recovery room where Emmett was dying to eat. He nursed well, we were able to dress him, and then we were off. We were out of the outpatient center by 9:00. We went out for a nice breakfast, let Brooklyn play with Jack all morning, and then picked her up before nap. Emmett slept the entire morning and most of the afternoon.
Emmett did great and was pretty happy (and sleepy) the first couple days after the surgery. The next few days you could tell that he was in pain. We did give him some Tylenol to help his pain. The bandage stayed on for a week. We went to have his scar checked by Dr. Jensen one week later. All looked good. The scar is on his hairline, so hopefully it will blend in some day when he gets more hair.
